weeks work
It has been a very sporty week, baseball, girls football and track are all in full swing. Here are some snaps from the past 3 days. Thanks for looking!

I was recently awarded 1st place in the Sports category and 2nd place in the Portrait category in Western Monthly Picture Contest for the month of February. I am super excited about this, it was my first ever month entering a clip competition as a staff photographer. See the images and judges comments here:

The frame on the left was shot last week, the frame on the right was shot this week, try and make sense of that.
I just got back from the NPAC Conference and POY Awards in Vancouver, great time all around. I'm going to give a shout out to Ian Willms, who took an honorable mention in the student photographer of the year category. I guess technically that makes him the second best student in Canada? Great work buddie. And this is what my adventure would have looked like if I were completely colourblind:

Technically I'm not supposed to shoot on weekends, but I had to check out this rodeo business. I spent a few hours yesterday tag-teaming the visuals with Woody (sports reporter/photographer at the Herald-Tribune) for a photo story running later in the week. Most of these shots were taken with an 85mm at f/1.8, 1000 ISO, and I was still only getting 1/160 of a second. I can't wait until the outdoor rodeos start!

Some exiting things happening in my life:
- NPAC Photojournalism 2008 Conference in Vancouver next weekend!
- I’m going to shoot my first rodeo this weekend!
- It’s supposed to be 18°C tomorrow!
- My beautiful girlfriend is moving here in 3 weeks!
- And it’s Friday!
Here are a few photos from the past few days:
This was for a feature on an elderly woman that lives in a care facility in town. There’s a group from Edmonton coming up to evaluate some problems with the facility, residents not getting the right medication and not being fed properly. We had to sneak in all James Bond styles to talk to one of the residents.
I was doing my almost daily walk around the park, hunting down some features, when I came across this man and his kite. It was a pretty cool kite, he insisted I couldn’t leave until I tried it out.
Yesterday was crazy busy, 3 rollovers and one minor train derailment, on top of my other assignments. This one was a bit out of town, EMS and Fire helping an injured person out of this Jeep.
Just a late afternoon basketball feature!
Little feature on the driving range opening. I shot a bunch of safety shots, then I started doing different things, like this silhouette. I noticed that with the right settings I could get the ball sharp in the shot, I think it worked out.
Hey! Sorry for the lack of updates lately, I have been moderately busy. I promise to have a more substantial post in the coming days. It's been busy here in Grande Prairie, in one week I saw Corb Lund, George Jones, Harland Williams and world famous Olympic ski-jumper Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards. Heres a frame from Corb Lund on Tuesday.

I just got back from an awesome trip to Ottawa. I ended up seeing a bunch of friends from school, as well as some of the hometown crew. It was fun being on the move again, I can't wait until Van City in April! As for Grande Prairie, things have been the same. Hockey is done, which is a bummer, but summer sports should be starting up soon enough! Here are a few photos from the past few days.
I went out to the local ski area and discovered this really sketchy tube run setup. This is one of the many shots I got with a kid moments away from eating it hard.
Gotta keep my silhouette hand strong, swing style!
Portrait of Carol Rigler and her granddaughter sitting with a diary that Carol wrote on a trip to the U.S. in 1952. She was just reunited with it after a man from Calgary found it and mailed it to her. I like the light!
I took this shot today, they probably wont run it, but its one of my favorites in a long time, hahah.
This is the Grande Prairie skyline, no joke, we have one high rise.
Sorry for the lack of updates, I have been a very busy bee, shooting as much as I can. I'm trying to bank a bunch of standalone shots in the coming days before I take off for Ottawa on the 18th. Here are a few frames from the past little while.
I heard some skateboarders in the park on Monday, decided to go check it out. I find it really funny that if you skateboard, you can hear a game of s-k-a-t-e from a mile away. I'm sure any skateboarders that read this can relate.
This was a three-car motor vehicle collision at 5:30am, one truck took out the traffic lights, one truck drove right into the skateboard shop and one was all smashed up on the other side of the intersection.
This was "a guy talking at a lunch meeting" shot. He had a cool slide up on the screen so I had to silhouette it, just had to. (my sincere apologies to all those silhouette haters out there)
A shot from a mixed martial arts event last weekend at one of the high schools in the city.
I sat in a puddle to get this shot, turned out all right.
